A first-timer's guide to Istanbul

Turkey’s cultural heart, Istanbul, is a city where history and hipness go hand in hand. One moment you’re wandering through centuries-old bazaars, the next, sipping cocktails at a rooftop bar that wouldn’t be out of place in Miami.

Being one of the largest cities in the world, there’s so much to unpack and explore – most visitors only scratch the surface. So to help you make the most of your time, we’ve done the research. From the city’s most stylish stays to exploring the Grand Bazaar’s rooftops James Bond-style, here’s your guide to experiencing the best of Istanbul.

Why visit Istanbul?

Istanbul is the ultimate city of contrasts. Stretching across Europe and Asia, it’s home to over 15 million people, making it as sprawling as it is diverse. Whether you’re here for a short break or as part of a wider multi-centre holiday, you’ll be captivated by the magnificent mosques, stunning rooftop views and the mouthwatering flavours of its multicultural cuisine.

How to get around

Getting around Istanbul is easy thanks to its excellent public transport and plentiful taxis (hailing an Uber is a go-to). Our top tip is to pick up an IstanbulKart as soon as you arrive – this handy pass works across buses, ferries and metro lines, letting you travel seamlessly across the city.

What to see and do

Here’s a countdown of Istanbul’s can’t-miss landmarks and a few alternative hidden gems that’ll show you a more local side of the city.

For a stress-free way to see it all, our Imperial Tour covers all the key highlights in one unforgettable day.

8. Galata Tower

This medieval stone tower, once a lookout point for ships and traders, offers panoramic views of Istanbul’s skyline, popular at sunset when the call to prayer resonates across the city.

Lesser-known find: Anemon Galata rooftop – Skip the crowds and entrance fee to the Galata Tower by taking in the views from this hotels’ rooftop restaurant.

7. Basilica Cistern

Descend into this ancient underground reservoir known as the ‘Sunken Palace’. Exploring its vast, echoing chambers feels like stumbling upon a forgotten world.

Lesser-known find: Theodosius Cistern – This smaller, little-known cistern offers a more intimate underground experience with equally atmospheric surroundings.

6. Grand Bazaar

Get lost in this labyrinthine market with over 4,000 stalls offering spices, textiles and glittering jewellery. Be sure to haggle and try a pomegranate tea at one of the traditional Turkish teahouses.

Lesser-known find: Arasta Bazaar – A more compact, off-the-beaten-track market near the Blue Mosque, with cheaper prices than the Grand Bazaar and a more authentic feel.

5. Blue Mosque

With its striking blue tiles and six minarets, this peaceful spot is a calm contrast to the city’s hustle.

Lesser-known find: Süleymaniye Mosque – Often overlooked, this mosque has impressive architecture, fewer crowds and views over the Golden Horn.

4. Topkapi Palace

Once the elaborate home of Ottoman sultans, this palace is a treasure trove of artefacts, surrounded by manicured gardens.

Lesser-known find: Dolmabahçe Palace – An extravagant 19th-century palace on the Bosphorus with crystal chandeliers and a blend of Ottoman and European architecture.

3. Balat Neighbourhood

Spend a few hours strolling around the storybook streets and vibrant houses of this colour-popped neighburhood.

Lesser-known find: Fener – Just next door to Balat, Fener has historic Greek Orthodox buildings and quirky streets but fewer tourists.

2. Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque

Once a cathedral, then a mosque and now a museum, this Byzantine building is famous for its towering dome and intricate mosaics.

Lesser-known find: Chora Church (Kariye Mosque) – A hidden gem with some of the most beautiful mosaics in the city, tucked away in the Edirnekapı neighbourhood.

1. Bosphorus Cruise

Cruising down the Bosphorus between two continents is a rite of passage in Istanbul. As you sail, take in spectacular views of the city’s skyline, forts and gingerbread palaces.

Lesser-known find: Eminönü to Kadıköy Ferry – Local ferries are the lifeblood of the city and this route takes you to the less-tourisy Asian side. The charming neighbourhood of Kadıköy is brimming with vibrant street life and cosy cafés.
