A makeover of a classic property has brought an increased level of luxury to the Bentota coastline.
Cinnamon Bentota Beach has been creating quite a stir on the hotel scene since it reopened following a two-year renovation. Occupying a sliver of land between golden sands and a mangrove-edged river, nestled among wild coconut groves, the rejuvenated beachfront retreat brings a slice of luxury to the south-west coast of Sri Lanka. Palm-strewn gardens wrap around a curvaceous swimming pool and tumble down to the beach below, where a toes-in-the-sand restaurant can be found.
Why we love Cinnamon Bentota Beach
-
With its mix of original, recreated and new design elements, the hotel looks as glamorous as when it first opened in 1967
-
There’s an appealing cultural element to the experiences, which include mask carving, puppet making and traditional drumming
-
The revamp has lost none of the breezy charms of superstar architect Geoffrey Bawa’s much-loved tropical modernist creation
-
It’s a wonderfully appealing setting, with 11 acres of grounds wedged between a long sandy beach and a wildlife-rich river
Rooms
A string of three low-slung wings house the 175 rooms and suites, whose interiors are warm and welcoming – think a creamy palette brought to life by burnt terracotta hues, a smattering of Sri Lankan wall art and lots of gleaming wood. Choose a Premium Room or Luxury Room in either the South Wing (close to the pool and resort gardens) or the West Wing which is located closer to the beach. The Mahawasala Wing is home to the resort’s 16 lavish suites that have separate living rooms and views over the garden towards the sea. If you want to enjoy eye-catching works by Sri Lankan artists in your room as well as the public spaces, we suggest a Junior or Premium Suite.
Facilities
There’s a beautifully designed all-day restaurant that turns into two specialist venues by night, plus a seafood eatery, pool bar and lounge bar to keep everyone happy.
Nossa
The all-day multi-cuisine restaurant offers an international buffet for breakfast and lunch, before transforming in the evening into an Italian eatery, Ottimo, and Asian-themed Zest.
Sea Meats Spice
The resort’s dinner-only seafood restaurant is the place to come for the catch of the day cooked exactly how you like.
Drench
Order a cocktail from the swim-up pool bar or have drinks and snacks brought to your lounger by servers on bicycles.
Fuze
Open until midnight, the resort’s stylish lounge bar serves up food and drinks during the day, with live music in the evening.
There’s something wonderfully decadent about watching an expert mixologist create your perfect cocktail at a bar you can swim up to.
