STORY Seychelles

Perfect peace and quiet

This beautiful boutique retreat is just steps from one of Mahé’s best beaches and has a great-value all-inclusive upgrade.

As you make your way up the sweeping drive and the grand entrance catches your eye, you can tell you’re in for an incredible experience. Go beyond the entrance and see the jaw-dropping Beau Vallon beach, with its backdrop of those verdant greens only possible in the tropics, and you’ll know you have made a great choice for some proper Seychelles-style relaxation. And with one of the best spas in the country – the oh-so peaceful Sesel Spa – on site and free yoga sessions four times a week, there’s little choice but to slow the pace down to almost a standstill.

Why we love STORY Seychelles

  • It has an incredible setting on Beau Vallon beach, just 10 minutes from the capital, Victoria, and five minutes from a national park

  • You can upgrade to an All Inclusive package that includes dinner at a choice of four restaurants – a rarity in the Seychelles

  • Talking of food, the choice is superb, with everything from fish and chips by the pool to award-winning Japanese cuisine

There’s a surprisingly good choice of places to eat for a smaller resort like STORY, with four restaurants, two bars that also serve food and a private dining experience on top of that.

Vascos
The hotel’s main restaurant Vascos is named after the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama and is a fantastic indoor-outdoor dining space. The food on offer here at breakfast and dinner is a mix of Creole and international, with a different theme every evening, and is created at live cooking stations.

Eden
Open for dinner by candlelight, this toes-in-the-sand venue has an à la carte menu featuring prime cuts and fresh-as-possible seafood cooked on the barbecue.

Seyshima
The resort’s dinner-only Asian restaurant, which looks as if it’s floating over the lagoon, is definitively something special. It’s won numerous awards for its service and incredible teppanyaki dishes, ramen bowls and sushi.

Trader Vic’s
For a French Polynesian vibe, head over to one of Mahé’s most highly rated restaurants, open most evenings. There are Vic’s classics like tuna tataki and mouthwatering dishes cooked in the wood-fired oven like miso-marinated salmon and sumac-marinated chicken.

1502 Bar
Open from 11am until late, STORY’s sophisticated main bar takes its name from the year Vasco da Gama discovered the Seychelles and offers superb cocktails and a food menu that covers all the bases from wraps and salads to fish & chips.

Ripples Pool Bar
This laidback all-day venue next to the pool is the ideal spot for a lazy lunch, cold drinks or afternoon snack.

If there’s something to celebrate, go all out and book an evening ‘Tête-À-Tête’; you’ll be talking about this private and personalised dining adventure for years to come.

At the holistic Sesel Spa, you can unwind in the Vichy hydrotherapy suite or book something from a treatment menu that combines techniques from around the world in a nod to the Seychelles’ multicultural history. One of the most popular massages is the gentle Sans Souci (‘no worry’), with its heady blend of nutmeg, cinnamon, patchouli, bigarade (the local neroli) and rose essential oils designed to promote instant calm. There are yoga sessions four mornings a week in the resort’s Beau Vallon Studio. Overlooking the lagoon, Beau Vallon gym is equipped with state-of-the-art Life Fitness cardio machines and free weights and is open around the clock. If you prefer classes, you can get fit in the water or strengthen your core; otherwise, there’s tennis, beach volleyball or table tennis.

Diving is very popular on Mahé, and courses and trips can be arranged. There’s a reef just 50 metres from Beau Vallon beach, and the resort supplies snorkelling gear so you can explore on your own and also offers snorkelling tours three times a week. There are also kayaks if that’s more your style

All of the outdoor lights are LED and solar-powered, while inside there are timers and sensors so lights aren’t left on unnecessarily. The resort has a fruit, vegetable and herb garden, and sources other produce – preferably Fair Trade and organic – locally. In partnership with the Marine Conservation Society of Seychelles, it’s involved in projects such as coral restoration. To reduce plastic use, drinking water comes in refillable glass bottles from the resort’s own water-bottling plant,
