Experience a healthy dose of ancient history and dramatic island hopping with our hand-picked Greece holidays.
Imagine the salty skin and windswept hair that sailing from one Greek island to another brings. There’s the taste of Ouzo and Muscat wine, the delight of trying Souvlaki for the first or umpteenth time and a postcard-perfect mix of pastel villages, archaeological sites, horseshoe harbours and pocket-sized fishing villages.
Charming islands peppered with traditional tavernas, iconic hot spots filled with show-stopping hotels and mainland stays in acres of beachfront luxury are all staples of a Greece holiday. There are uninhabited corners where you can spend a sun-soaked afternoon waiting for catch-of-the-day to be served and deep beneath the sea you may be lucky enough to spot a monk seal or two.
We love holidays to Greece for the easy pace of island life, while mainland Greece is a worthy beauty contender with its treasure trove of Byzantine history and miles of soft sand and island-style vibes around the coastland of Halkidiki.
Our Personal Travel Experts know Greece really well. If you want to find out more about any of the islands or a trip to the mainland, get in touch and we’ll tailor make your perfect holiday.

Historical Crete
Dive into Crete’s rich traditions and folklore on a trip that also introduces you to some of the island’s most striking scenery. The adventure kicks off in the charming village of Vrisses, with its backdrop of the White Mountains, where you’ll visit a family-run vineyard and learn about the wines as well as olive oil and other local products. Heading eastward through more enchanting settlements, you’ll reach Myriokefala, home to a picturesque monastery dating from the 11th century. The main draw is its ancient frescoes, only rediscovered recently during renovation work, though the cheese pies with honey from a nearby coffee shop – a local speciality – are also well worth investigating. Your next stop was one of western Crete’s most important cities during Roman times, before being destroyed in 828 AD. You’ll find traces of ancient Lappa in what is now the village of Argyroupolis, where you can enjoy lunch in one of the local taverns. Continuing through more sleepy villages, you’ll arrive at Vouves. You’ll stop here to have a look at one of the oldest olive trees in Crete, thought to be 3,000 years old, and drop in at the olive tree museum. From here, you’ll head to the winery for the second part of the tour, an in-depth discovery of the five Anoskeli wines made here, including a chance to taste them. Seeing the superfine pastry being made by hand is quite an experience, as is tasting some of the delicious sweetmeats made from it, such as baklava and kataifi. Discover Knossos
Immerse yourself in the world of the ancient Minoans on a private tour of some of their most important sites. The first of these is the palace of Knossos, the ceremonial and political hub of this extraordinarily advanced Bronze Age civilisation and an archaeological site well worth lingering over. From here, you’ll be whisked in your Land Rover along a dirt road flanked by pine forests towards the summit of Giouhtas, regarded by the Minoans as a sacred mountain and where, legend has it, Zeus is buried. Along the way, you’ll have time to search for aromatic herbs, catch a glimpse of the vultures that live here, and soak up the stunning views of the vine-clad valley of Archanes. After the culture and vultures come wine and food: a tasting and tour at a local winery followed by a delicious Cretan lunch at a local tavern. From here, the route takes you inland to another supremely atmospheric spot, the monastery of Agia Triada Tsangarolon, built towards the end of the 17th century. It’s a tranquil and photogenic complex, with elegant Venetian-style architecture and courtyard gardens filled with bougainvillaea and oleander. Where is Greece?
Greece is on the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula with its islands in the eastern Mediterranean. The Ionian Sea is to the left and the Aegean to the right. Officially known as the Hellenic Republic it has some 6000 islands of which over 200 are inhabited. Greece has about 9000 miles of coastline and Mount Olympus is the highest point.
History
The influence of Greece has been felt around the northern coasts Mediterranean for thousands of years and today, the country is scattered with numerous reminders of powerful civilisations. Athens is home to the iconic Acropolis, which rises high above the city streets, and the Panathenaic Stadium, while Crete has the vast Bronze Age ruins of Knossos. Just a short boat ride from Mykonos is the fascinating island of Delos, the mythical birthplace of Greek gods Apollo and Artemis. If you’ve headed for Cape Sounio for some post-city-exploration r ‘n’ r, make time for a visit to the Temple of Poseidon, or if you’ve chosen Rhodes as your island getaway, explore the Acropolis of Lindos.
Island hopping
Sail some of the Med’s prettiest islands on an island-hopping holiday around Greece. Hop aboard and discover swathes of golden sand, charming taverna-lined waterfronts, pocket-sized fishing villages and secret coves. Travel between the lesser-visited Sporades Islands – Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos – each with their own unique charm, or explore the vibrant hot spots of Mykonos and Santorini.
Getting around
Most islands have a main town where you’ll find the port for passenger ferries. You can take a boat or plane from island to island. It’s also easy to get around by bus, taxi or rented car. Water taxis are common, taking you to secret coves, isolated beaches and other islands in the region.
Diving & snorkelling
Clear warm waters and unique coral reefs make diving from the Greek Islands a popular activity. Chania on Crete is a fantastic place to see volcanic reefs and unusual marine life. Mykonos’ Paradise Point has exciting swim-throughs and extreme drop-offs and diving on both sides of Santorini uncovers several wrecks. We recommend snorkelling from the peninsula of Afionas Beach on Corfu or on the surface of Halkidiki’s crystal clear waters.
Food & drink
Ripe cherry tomatoes, that famous Santorini salad, line-caught calamari and orange fava… on all the Greek Islands you’ll find fresh and vibrant ingredients. Put simply, you’ll never be far from delicious, fresh seafood. Dine at local waterfront tavernas, at 3am straight from a fishing boat or tucked away in one of Mykonos’ stylish restaurants. Expect romantic moonlit dining in secret caves, lobster and octopus caught in front of you, cliffside restaurants with Aegean Sea views and expansive wine lists in a country known for its vinotourism.
